You may have a developed economy, but without a strong army, it just creates the temptation for your more militarized neighbors. It is too late to think about defense when the enemy army is already plundering your lands. So spare no expense and prepare a strong army in peacetime.
Put one (two*) action cube on the area of your player mat, where you plan to recruit. Recruit units of one type up to the number of respective structures you have constructed. Pay for every unit and place them in your city, or your castle, or a hex adjacent to your city / castle.
Placement Restrictions: Ground units can only be placed on land hexes, vessels can only be placed on water hexes. This restriction overrides all placement options - for example, vessels cannot be placed in a city even though cities are normally valid placement locations, because cities are on land hexes.
Recruitment Capacity: The number of units you can recruit with a single action equals the number of structures you've constructed of that type. For example, if you've built 3 barracks (3 empty barracks slots on your mat), you can recruit up to 3 units in one action. Similarly, 2 constructed cities mean you can hire up to 2 peasants per action. Each area on your player mat corresponds to specific unit types, which are depicted directly beneath each area on the mat.
Elite Units: Starting from age II, each nation can recruit its unique
elite units. Your nation card specifies where these units can be recruited. If marked with an asterisk, you must have at least one
castle* built to unlock recruitment in any listed location.
Unit Availability:
Units can be recruited if only you have them in your supply. Siege machines, galleys and elite units can be recruited starting from
age II, and trebuchets - from age ІІІ.
Repeat: In your turn, while choosing the recruitment as your main action, you can recruit several times, the same or different units, spending action cubes each time. By reusing the same area, you can recruit a different type of unit there.
* Two Cubes: If there are any action cubes on this area, thus you have already recruited there this round, place two action cubes to recruit in that area again.
Laura is planning to attack Albert's city, so she chooses recruitment as her main action this turn.
